Book Review: Revolution 2020 Love, Corruption and Ambition
Bon Ami Laishram
Revolution 2020 is the story of three childhood friends: Gopal, Rajhav and Arti. The story is set in the holy city of Varanasi.Gopal, Rajhav and Arti are schoolmates.
The book is plotted in such a manner that the character of the main protagonist is set as the narrator and the writer himself is listening the narration being narrated.
Gopal comes from an Indian middle class background. Rajhav is from well to do family and Arti belongs to a bureaucratic family. Three of them have their own ambitions. Gopal dreams to become a rich man, Rajhav wants to change the world and Arti dreams to be a Cabin Crew.
Gopal and Raghav appear JEE and AIEEE exam together but Gopal fails to make the place. Gopal is forced by his father to crack the exam and he is sent to Kota , Rajasthan for coaching. Gopal has to go to fulfill his father's dream.Whereas Raghav crackes the exam and he is admitted at BHU. Arti falls in love with Raghav.
Gopal can't make it even after one year of coaching. He returns to Vanarasi empty handed. His father has also passed away by the time. He loiters around the education fair in search for Engineering College and fate doesn't allow him.
Gopal chooses corruption as every possible door is closed and he has nowhere to go except corruption. On the other hand , after graduation Raghav leaves all the perks and decides to work for the welfare of the society. Arti takes Hotel Management coarse and she and Raghav is still together. At the same time Arti is also maintaining her friendship with Gopal. Now, Gopal is the honourable Director of newly launched institution Ganga Tech. Arti finds herself attracting to Gopal, the Director of Ganga Tech.
Gopal has changed his fortune and Raghav has became poorer because of his choice of job. Arti and Gopal become closer than ever despite her relationship with Raghav. Arti also admits that she doesn't want to be Raghav anymore but she can't admit this to Reghav in person. She has fallen for Gopal. Gopal and Arti spend time together despite having busy schedules. Gopal considers Arti as the reason behind his success.
At the end , Gopal realizes Rajhav's honesty and his misdeeds. So, he downsizes his image and displays himself as a cheap person to Arti. He sends her off far apart from himself. Actually , Arti is there to express her feelings for Gopal through a card. Gopal finds the card and he can't stop weeping after reading the card.
Raghav and Arti get married and Gopal becomes unstoppable with Ganga Tech. Raghav becomes new MLA of their constituency and Arti works in the hotel.
I think that Revolution 2020 is a book that is based on reality other than stuffing with fairytale contents, it depicts the transformation of a good for nothing boy to a successful person with no peace. It shows a girl roller cloistering between two boys. The character of Arti, the female protagonist can be seen as an opportunist who always finds herself attracting to gold bearer unknowingly. Gopal is too fast in denouncing Arti whom he considers as the love of his life. He suddenly comes up with a thought and sacrifice the love of his life without whom he will find difficulty in breathing. Arti is the big reason behind the success of Gopal. However, Gopal sacrifices Arti for the sake of his childhood friend and choose to live in anxiety for himself. Gopal is still mourning and suffering. Without Arti , his life is dark. His gold can't glitter his dark world. His heart bleeds whenever he hears the name around.
This is one of the best creations of Chetan Bhagat. The plots are beautifully penned with conscience and each scene is enough of throwing the reader deep into curiosity. The readers won't stop flipping the pages. This is the story which every college going students can relate to. The sense of pain and sorrow which Gopal underwent in the plot is easily sensible to almost all of youngsters of same age group as pain and sorrow seems to be another side of the coin, the extreme joy and pride experienced by Raghav at his academic achievements is touched, the feelings of Arti can't be commented as woman's heart is deeper than a well. The heroic transition through time is applaudable and this transition shown another side of the coin where Gopal is bestowed with power, honour and wealth even without a college degree and Raghav has gone to reverse direction in quest for justice and truth and Arti has switched back to Gopal from academically successful Raghav. Its very sensitive to those teenagers who have been in such situation. Gopal conquered his dream with an illegal means even though he made his fortune at a very young age without even attending college. The writer put a break in the mind of readers to show that Gopal has to pay for opting unfair path to fulfill his dream of becoming a rich man. Gopal has to abandon the love of his life Arti. He had to sacrifice the love of his life who has also been one of the reasons behind his desire to become a rich man. He sacrificed her for her own good, he sacrificed her for his childhood friend Raghav who has lost almost everything in the fight against corruption and injustice, he sacrificed her for a better society and thrown himself in the ocean of pain and sorrow.
This is the only Chetan Bhagat's novel among his first five novels which hasn't been adapted into movies or series. The audiences would love to watch the adaptation if it happens.
